Strange Strangers

1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels. (Hebrews 13:1-2)

*****

The truth is, you do not know how anyone else in the entire world really feels.

You can imagine how you’d feel in similar circumstances but that is a far cry from how others actually feel.

In one sense we are all strangers. The .07 inch thick skin that covers our bodies might as well be a 1000 light years thick – even for those closest to us.

We think we know them, and, at least with close family and friends, to a degree perhaps we do. But there is still a vast chasm that separates us.

I mention this today, not to depress you, but to remind you to practice humility.

Don’t be so quick to mete out judgement. Slow down on telling people what they ought to do. Practice withholding judgment until it is absolutely required. Give time a chance. Perhaps you misread the signals. Perhaps you are wrong on the motives you attributed them. Perhaps your opinions are faulty.

Afterall, they are a stranger and strangers are often misunderstood.

The ONE THING for today: Be slow to judge, slow to speak, and quick to give grace. There’s enough that separates us as it is without us adding to the distance…and oddly enough, sometimes strangers turn out to be angels in disguise.
