Trapped in a moment

You are more than a moment.

You are more than this moment.

I was reminded of this recently when, in a sermon, I gave a brief review of some of the major events and ordeals that I had seen and lived through. Having been around for over six decades, the list was fairly extensive.

My point was that in this frightful moment of dealing with a global pandemic, we can lose sight of a lot of other moments that God has helped us through.

In other words, though the future is uncertain, history is on our side. God has been faithful through many, many other crisis moments and it stands to reason that He will continue to be so.

After the service I was surprised at how many people came up to me and expressed their appreciation for me sharing my little history lesson.

Turns out, they too had a list, but the “moment” (today, now, this urgent and troubling situation) had caused them to forget and lose perspective.

Bad moments can be like a throbbing toothache. The pain in the moment that feels like it is killing you, can cause you to forget that you’ve survived far worse things.

Bottom line…

The ONE THING for today: Don’t allow any particular moment to define you. You are more than a moment. History is on your side; you’ve still got a lot of living to do!
