The question to consider today is: Why are you doing this?
Why are you depriving yourself of food and fun, from doing what you want to do?
If you are “giving up in order to go up” that will not do.
Is it about losing weight; bringing your appetites into submission? Good, but not good enough.
Is it about starving sin in your life? Even better, but still not enough.
Remember, fasting is ultimately and mostly about pursuing God. It is about dropping everything and anything that might hinder your relationship with God.
It is about carving/starving out time to be with God.
Anything less will only frustrate you—especially when the going gets tough.
Bottom line, nothing but love—love for God will make this season of fasting lastingly beneficial.
- Prayer: Oh God, I make an oath of love today. Not love for me and mine but for you. I am battering my flesh, denying my appetites, and laying down my life because I love you. And I count it joy to do so because I love you. I am thankful for the added benefits that will come from this season of fasting but they are not my focus—you are.
James 1:12 (NKJV)
12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
