Day 5/40-day: Press in

Matthew 5:8 (NKJV) Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

You’re five days in now on your fasting. Reality is setting in. Hunger hurts. So what should you do? Press in harder.

There’s gold and then there’s pure gold. 160106 Day 5

This season of fasting is about refining yourself–fasting the dross out of your life.

Press in today. Tweak your fasting commitments (those things you have stopped and those things you have started). Assess, take another look, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and help you perfect the process.

I’ll use my wife as an example (no surprise there!). Sonja loves music. I have made the observation many times that if you took music out of Sonja there would hardly be anything left. And when I say music I mean almost any type of music. On any given day I may hear her yodeling or singing opera, rocking with a hard core Christian rock band or humming with a Blue grass band. (I am not speaking “evangelistically” here, this is literally true).

A few years ago Sonja pressed in on her love of music and during that year’s 40-day season she only listened to Christian music. She testifies to this day that she has never been the same since (and I can confirm this as a witness of the change). Today her listening habits are much purer and her praise and worship have a depth and dimension that they did not have before the time she refined her music listening habits.

That is one of the reasons for giving yourself to a season of fasting–refining yourself so that you will be more purer and thus have more of God.

  • Prayer: Oh God, I am hungry for you! What can I do to better see you, hear you, be with you? Nothing is to small or big; I will do anything and give up anything that will give me more of you. Speak Lord and I will obey.

Genesis 35:2 (NKJV) And Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.”

James 4:8 (NKJV) Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
