The ONE THING for today

Lessons Learned at a Truck Stop, part 4

And now for my last (and most important) lesson learned at a Truck Stop…

One of my most memorable Christmas memories occurred in a plush nursing home.

It goes back many years when I was pastoring in Easley, South Carolina.

Long story short, one of the precious elderly ladies in our church had a stroke. The results of the stoke were so severe that when she was dismissed from the hospital she had to be permanently admitted into a nursing home.  Her children did right by her, obtaining a room in perhaps the most plush and ritzy facility of this type that I have ever seen.

That Christmas Sonja and I, along with our two children, went to visit her. It was so sad 😦 // in an effort to cheer her up I cheerfully asked, “What is your favorite Christmas carol?” (I was going to get my family to sing it to her.)

Without any hesitation she immediately replied and it was not hard, even in her stroke savaged body, to understand her response. The answer she gave was, “I’ll be home for Christmas.”

It was all we could do to not cry for everyone in the room knew that most likely she would never go home for Christmas again.

I’ve never forgotten that occasion and think about it every Christmas.  As nice as her plush appartment, gourment meals, and attentive staff were, her current surroundings could never compare to the simple joy and pleasure of being in her own home with family and friends.

You ask, “What does this have to do with lessons learned at a Truck Stop?”

The answer is simple: Truck Stops are not the purpose for the trip, they’re only stopping points on the journey.

  • The ONE THING for today: Don’t allow the challenges and interruptions of the journey to rob you of the joy of the trip, for you never know which trip will be your last one.

I’ll be Home for Christmas (lyrics)

I’ll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas Eve will find meill_be_home_for_christmasd
Where the love light gleams
I’ll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams

I’ll be home for Christmas
You can plan on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I’ll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
If only in my dreams
