It wasn’t the claim that Jesus was “bread” but that he was “bread from heaven” that got the people upset at him in his day.
Nothing has changed (except to maybe have gotten worse).
People do not mind if you have an opinion. They don’t mind if you have a belief or practice.
What they mind is when you claim to know the truth; when you claim your belief comes from God and is exclusively right and that it must be obeyed.
So what is a person to do when they know the truth; when they choose to abide by transcendent (for all times and places) truth? Answer: Obey.
Remember, the loudest person is not always right. The most popular, charismatic, articulate, and beautiful person is not always right. The majority is not always right. It is the one that abides by the truth that is always right.
- The ONE THING for today: Be as nice about it as you can, but have the courage to live by the truth.
41 The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” 42 And they said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”
