“The one thing” for today is this: When you’re there – be there / when you’re not – don’t be there. Now I know that is a mouth-full so let me briefly unpack it…
With this being Friday, Friday the 13thno less – but who’s superstitious – I want to encourage you to be aggressive in giving your best effort today. It is very easy to kick into “weekend mode” early but when you do it is like cheating on your own golf score – you’re only cheating yourself, and if you’re playing with others you have the added insult of diminishing your character in front of them.
There is nothing wrong with striving for excellence and seeking to be a top producer, matter of fact I would expect nothing less from you; and so does your Lord and Savior I might add (Matthew 25:25-29). However, I want to remind you that the motivation for doing this is NOT promotion, money, and influence. All of those things should be the rewards/fruits of your labor (Proverbs 22:29). The real motivation for giving your best is because you are a person of godly character and integrity. Your love of Christ demands that you excel – you represent Him. There are other good reasons that I could add under this heading – things like building a good name (Proverbs 22:1).But the point is this: “When you’re there – be there” (Give your best at whatever you’re doing).
Having said that, don’t forget the second part of what I want you to think about today: “When you’re not there – don’t be there!”
When the proverbial whistle blows – pack up your things and walk away. In just a few short years your job, your career, and your status with your company will not matter; why would you want to take something that will pass away home with you? Not only should you not allow your work to define you, you shouldn’t let it define your weekend. Leave “work” at work and go home and “be there 100%”.
Enjoy this weekend – I insist.
