Who art in Heaven…
_Matthew 6:9, The Lord’s Prayer
When we pray the words “in Heaven” we must not rush by them.
As one preacher put it, “Heaven is weird.”
Yes, through prayer, we can approach God, but please do not fall for the soft sell that paints God as an easy-going, look-the-other-way surfer Dude who invites you to be his buddy on a thrill-seeking cosmic joy ride.
“In Heaven” implies a dimension beyond this world, a throne higher than this world and an accountability to a non-human omnipotent Being who created us for His purpose (not ours).
Or to put it a little closer to home, don’t allow all this easy talk about having a personal relationship with Jesus cause you to think it is an easy, no-judgement, low-expectation, college fraternity friendship.
Jesus said, “You are my friends if you do what I command you.” (John 15:14)
Jesus not your frat brother. Think more in terms of Lordship – His lordship over your life.
It’s like knowing the King personally. Sure, you have a personal relationship with him but you’re still his subject.
If your personal relationship with Jesus is not like that you may know the wrong Jesus and you may be praying to the wrong God.
