Daniel 6:18 (RSV)
18 Then the king went to his palace, and spent the night fasting; no diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.
Fasting is not strictly a Christian practice. All the major religions practice this spiritual discipline and even nonbelievers fast.
But oh the difference for the Christians.
We do not fast to please or placate a demanding god. We do not fast because life is so overwhelming that we lose our appetite.
No, for the Christian, the motivation is far difference. As Christians we fast because we are hungry…hungry for food the world knows not of.
- Prayer: Father God, I do not have to do this. I know that I can quit this fast anytime I want and it will not adversely affect my relationship with you. I offer this fast to you as a sign of my love and hunger for you. Come Holy Spirit and fill me as nothing in this world can do.
Psalm 59:15 (NLT) They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied.
Psalm 4:8 (NLT) In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.
