John 1:1 (NKJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
How old are you?
I’m guessing you are older than today. I’m guessing that, like Jesus at the dawn of creation, long before this day began you was.
Truthfully, today is not much of a fresh start. All that you was this morning when you got up is going to go with you throughout this day, you’re going to have to deal with it—you is what you was. (I know, you’ll have to read that last line again and more slowly.)
Here’s the deal…
There is a “you” that has existed long before every one of your beginnings and you bring that “you” with you into every beginning, whether it is a new day, a new project…whatever.
Thus, the only way to ensure a better tomorrow is to improve the “you” of today.
Are you going to do anything different today about the you you want to be? (Please note, we are not discussing all the pain-in-the-rear people you keep wishing would change; the only person you can really change is you; deal with you and leave the others with God.)
Is there going to be any change of habit? Are you going to spew out the same old gripes, and be the same old grump you’ve been for the last however long? Are you going to make yet one more exception when it comes time to say no to dessert and yes to exercise? Are you going to find yet one more excuse to not read your bible and spend time with God? Are you?
Then count on it; tomorrow when you get up the you you was will be the you you is.
There’s not a pill you can take at night which will change you overnight. The tooth fairy is not going to come tonight and relieve you of that extra twenty pounds you’ve been ignoring. God’s not going to send an angel in the night to shake you and like pepper out of a shaker all your bad attitudes and bad thoughts will fall out of your head.
No, you are going to have to intentionally, diligently and faithfully change something about you today if you hope to be a better person tomorrow.
- The ONE THING for today: Until you decide to change something about the you you are today, nothing is going to change about the you you will be in the future. Why not really make today a new beginning? Change something about you.
46 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive to their own lands, far away or near; 47 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captors and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’; 48 and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray to you toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name; 49 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.
