A clear conscience may be the sign of a bad memory not that everything is OK between you and God.
Just because you are at peace right now does not mean the hammer is not about to fall.
You can be feeling great just before dropping dead of a heart attack.
Hold on, I’m not trying to cloud up and rain on your party. But trust me, I know from both personal experience and from being a pastor all these years that we humans are great at ignoring the tell-tale warning signs that are blinking brightly around us.
On a number of occasions I have tried to reason with people who had betrayed their spouse and left their marriage all because it felt so great being with the person they were committing adultery with. I would have been better off trying to walk on water.
I’ve tried to reason with people who were bound by addictions who were at perfect peace while their world was falling apart around them.
I can’t tell you the times I’ve tried to explain to people who were piling on debt like a drunken sailor that eventually they would have to pay all that back and I might as well have been talking to a fence post.
I don’t believe we humans evolved from lower animals. But if I did my guess would be that we didn’t evolve from monkeys but ostriches because we are absolutely great at hiding our heads in the sand while the truth is parading by.
Bottom line, please take time regularly to really examine your life; measure your well-being against the standard of God, not by how you feel right now.
- The ONE THING for today: Remember, the goal of life is not the pursuit of happiness or feeling good; the goal of life is to please God; get that right and everything else falls into place just nicely.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 (NKJV)
