The ONE THING for today

Beware of people who tell you what to do

Did you catch the irony in the title of today’s blog?  I’m telling you what to do–better beware! 🙂

However, the ONE THING for today is not about you not doing what people tell you to do; we all have people in our lives that have the authority or have earned the right to tell us things to do.  We get that.

The reminder I want to give you is to not allow your mind to grow “flabby” while doing so.

Beware that if you let them, people will broaden their input into your life by telling you what to do about things that are not really their business.  Most times they mean no harm, it just happens.  They’re use to telling you what to do and you’re used to doing what they tell you to do.  They’re use to expressing their opinion and you’re used to listening to it.  But if their orders/opinions move beyond their pay grade you are then surrendering your intellectual independence.

And speaking of independence, it’s easy to just become a part of the crowd and let crowd/mob make your decisions for you.  Remember, it may be OK to vote on where you and your friends/colleagues are going to eat lunch, but it is not OK to allow the crowd to determine how you feel or whether or not you do or do not do something.

You’re more than just a cog in the wheel.  You are more than just a member of the crowd.  You are an individual—made in the image of God.  You are different (in a good way) and you have a brain that God gave you…

Use it.

  • The ONE THING for today: Don’t sacrifice your intellectual independence just because there are people in your life telling you what to do or how to think.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV)
