Remember, if it only cost you money or if you sent someone else “in your place” chances are you are not really committed. You know you are committed to someone or something when it becomes personal—when that person or project gets a part of you.
And here’s another thing, the more permanent that “part-of-you” commitment is, the greater the return—both for you and that which you are committing yourself to.
Finally, the greatest commitments are those “till death do we part” commitments.
To sum things up…
Commitment is not sending a check or sending someone else; commitment ultimately is being there yourself. And since there is only so much of you to give (being a finite person), please don’t fall prey to the easy commitments—like being committed to work, hobbies, quests, bucket lists, etc. These things must only be a means to an end. In the end, the only thing worth truly and fully giving yourself away for is people.
And to get this right, the ultimate person to be committed to is a Person—God; get that relationship right and everything else falls into place.
The ONE THING for today: Commitment is not sending someone or something else; commitment is being there yourself.
