- Proverbs 26:12 (NKJV) Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
This is an amazing verse to me; after eleven straight verses describing the sad and senseless state of being a fool, Solomon comes along now and says that a man wise in his own eyes is even worse!
What is the point? The point is that anytime we make ourselves the standard (wise in our own eyes) we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Every human-being has blind spots and we are easily deceived. Beware of “following your own heart” or doing things because it makes sense to you or “feels right”. Beware of making life about you–what you want or desire.
A truly wise man or women seeks outside counsel and the best place to start is the word of God.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24 (NKJV)
