Feeling a little salty?

“We would be wise to remember that the best we can do is change the world; only Jesus can save the world.” — Jesus Manifesto: Restoring the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus Christ by Leonard Sweet, Frank Viola

In his famous sermon, often referred to as the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus asked an interesting question.  After comparing those who would be his disciples to salt he asked, “What good is salt if it has lost its flavor?” (Matthew 5:13)

The answer to this question is pretty obvious: It would be worthless.

But here’s the question that intrigues me: How does salt lose its flavor? (When was the last time your salt went bad on you?)

The only way that I could find was that salt can become so diluted that it can no longer be tasted.  For all practical purposes it is like there was never any salt sprinkled in.

Diluted…

Now there’s a word worth thinking about.

  • Diluted…spread so thin that you end up doing little of lasting worth.
  • Diluted…so many acquaintances that you have little time for friends.
  • Diluted…so tolerate that you end up standing for nothing.
  • Diluted…so much noise, news, and neurosis coming at you that you lose you.

“You”

Now there’s a salty word.

Drop you into any situation and there’s a chance for you to make a difference…

…so long as you are really there and not diluted to the point of insignificance.

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Mark 10:21 (NIV)
