“Being man is to desire success, but success rarely comes. The wisest has written upon life it’s sad epitaph. ‘All is vanity,’ all nothingness.
The tradesman sees the noble fortune for which he lived, every coin of which is the representative of so much time and labor spent, squandered by a spendthrift son.
The purest statesmen find themselves at last neglected and rewarded by defeat. Almost never can a man look back on life and say that its anticipations have been realized. For the most part life is disappointment.”
— Sermons Preached at Trinity Chapel, Brighton by Frederick W. Robertson Volume 1, 1861
This is a somber quote but worth remembering.
Being immortal beings, I suppose this short life will never completely be satisfying.
It is good to remember that whether you succeed or fail you will be forgotten. Life moves on. The major players and issues of today are but blips on the graph of time.
Therefore, do not take yourself or the issues of today too seriously. While they are important, and you will give an account of your decisions and efforts, its encouraging to remember that God didn’t bet the universal ranch on whether or not you succeed or fail today or any day.
The ONE THING for today: Give today all you got – leave nothing on the table – but remember, there’s more rooms and more tables in God’s house than the room your “table” is in on. Let today’s quote be a reminder to you to always look beyond this life. That’s where you hope or doom lies.
Get that right and all’s ultimately right.
“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
