The argument of despair and cynicism goes something like this:
(1) An all-good God would defeat evil
(2) An all-powerful God can defeat evil
(3) Evil is not defeated
(4) Hence, there can be no such God
The answer of Christmas goes something like this:
(1) An all-good God would defeat evil
(2) An all-powerful God can defeat evil
(3) Evil is not yet defeated
(4) Therefore, because God is all-good and all-powerful we know that evil will be defeated and the birth of Jesus was the day God showed up to begin the battle
Revelation 21:4 (NLT)
4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And in despair I bowed my head:
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth he sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men.”
Till, ringing singing, on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
