Thoughts from an elevator.

While using an elevator over the weekend I noticed an advertisement promoting the motel’s restaurant.  It featured three words.  It read “Relax – Renew – Refresh”

I thought to myself, “Not bad, but I wish they’d the add word “Reflect”.

But then relaxing, renewing, and refreshing are so much more fun that reflecting.

Relaxing, renewing, and refreshing is about self; reflecting may make us think about someone besides ourselves.  Why, Heaven forbid, reflecting might even require that we think of God!

But I wonder how much tragedy and heartbreak could have been avoided, just in that busy motel, if people, after a long hard day of out of town work and travel had entered that little restaurant and relaxed, renewed, refreshed, and reflected?

Reflected on how much they loved their family back home.

Reflected on the big picture vs. the “fun” of a single night.

Reflected on how they want to be remembered.

Reflected on the value of a good name.

Reflected on the unintended consequences of our actions.

You know, its amazing what can go through your mind while riding an elevator up to the third floor.

  • The ONE THING for today: Follow the carpenter’s maxim: “Measure twice; cut once.”

Psalm 119:55 (NLT)

55 I reflect at night on who you are, O Lord;     therefore, I obey your instructions.
