2016 40-day Fast

Day 31/40 Communal Fasting…

Joel 1:14 (ESV)

14 Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly.  Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord.

I must confess, I am glad to see this fast winding down! Thirty-one days is long time but after today I have only nine more days.

It is easy to make fasting about yourself. After all, nobody else can be hungry for you. But there is also a time to make fasting a communal affair.

That is what God instructed the leaders of Joel’s day to do—to call a solemn assembly of all the people to the house of the Lord for a season of spiritual repentance and renewal.

Your church may or may not be in a season of fasting right now, but why don’t you include your church in your fasting this week. Let’s make it a week where we especially pray for our church and leaders.

After all, Christianity was never meant to be a solo act; Jesus came to build his church. Let’s use this week to do our part in building up our local congregation.

  • Prayer: Father God, I lift up my pastor and fellow members to you today. Build a special hedge around us that the gates of Hell will not prevail. Renew and refresh my pastor with a fresh anointing and with the wisdom and strength required to lead my church with joy.
  • I also lift up all the leaders and members of my church. Give us love one for another and, above all, a deep hungry to know and please you.

Zechariah 7:5 (ESV)

“Say to all the people of the land and the priests, when you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted?”
