- Proverbs 28:9 (NKJV) One who turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.
Keep in mind that when Solomon speaks of “the law” he is referring to his bible (the Old Testament at the time).
With that in mind, today’s verse is a reminder of the importance of praying and reading your bible together. When we divorce our prayers from the word of God we end up trying to align God’s actions according to our will; when we pray with an opened Bible in front of us we tend to align our prayers according to God’s will—which is a much better policy.
Perhaps when the writer wrote: “Watch and pray” he was referring to this verse.
Anyway, prayer without bible reading tends toward being emotional and self-centered. Bible reading without praying tends toward becoming an academic exercise that is sterile and perfunctory.
However, like the baby bear’s porridge, praying and reading our bibles together is “just right.”
Even Goldilocks would have understood that!
