The ONE THING for today

Lessons I Learned on Vacation – Nature Trails include Bugs and Snakes

  • Job 5:7 (NKJV) Yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

Chattanooga sports numerous opportunities for enjoying nature—everything from a beautiful river walk, State Parks, and other nature trails.  Sonja and I availed ourselves to these every day while on our vacation.

On day we were walking on the river walk trail and had taken a moment to stay at a little way station to relax.  As we sat there just a few feet away a large snake slithered across the path we had just walked on!

Every day I ended up with new bug bites of some kind (I attract bug bites like cookies attract biting grandkids).  I’m still itching from those many bites.

Here’s the deal: it’s almost impossible to enjoy nature without nature biting you.  That’s just how nature is designed.

That is also how life is designed.  No matter how hard you try you will not find an insurance company out there that ensures against good fortune coming your way.  But there are probably a dozen opportunities within a few minutes from your home for you to buy insurance that ensures against storms, floods, earthquakes, theft, fire, sickness, accidents, tree limbs and jet engines falling on you or your house and even death (through you won’t get the money if you die // I’ve never understood why insurance agents call it “life” insurance).

Bottom line: Nature trails include snakes and bugs and life in general includes a lot of bumps and bruises.

If you are not willing to accept that, then you are going to be miserable.  Living “safe” can lead to living “sterile.”  Dear friend, get out there—risk a few bug bites and running into other strange critters (some of which will be human!).  That’s why you buy insurance and that’s why you trust God—and that’s the only way to really enjoy life.
