- Nehemiah 6:3 (NKJV) So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”
The background for today’s Bible verse comes from an account in the life of a leader who had to deal with people trying to stop him from achieving his mission. (See Nehemiah 6:1-16)
Here is the thought I want to leave with you today: The quickest way to stop a worthy work is to stop the leader.
And here is why that matters to you: You are a leader in some way.
You may or may not have the title or job description that says you are a leader, but trust me, your life matters. Whether it is a family, a friend or a factory—you are leading someone and something through you influence and input. And influence means you are affecting the outcome. Just because you are you means that life is going to turn out differently for someone.
So, since you are a leader, one of the main things you must not allow is for “enemies” to distract you from your mission. Stay focused today. Do not allow the barbs and bribes of those around you to distract you. There will always be someone offering you lesser things as an excuse to ignore your responsibilities—don’t let them!
Lesser things are the bane of a purposeful leader.
Lesser things come to us from lesser people and lesser things are only attractive when we allow those lesser people to become more important to us than the people we are leading.
Think, for example, of the man who spends countless hours with his buddies and forget the little buddy back home—lesser people taking him away from the greater. In the end, there will only be regret for the father and for the son and the man’s “buddies” will have gone on with their lives.
Lesser things // lesser people—they are not for you, don’t even go there, stay focused on the mission.
