Cut out the bull…

The words of Chuck Swindoll highlight well the topic I want to brief you on today:

  • “There are a lot of different types of sermons. There’s the expository sermon, the topical sermon and then there is the Longhorn sermon – a point here and a point there and a lot of bull in between.” _Chuck Swindoll

I can’t stress enough the importance for you to know exactly what it is you are going to talk about tomorrow and what it is that you prayerfully want to achieve. If you are not crystal clear on this then you are not yet ready for Sunday. Spend the rest of your day answering these questions:

  1. What is my thesis? (You should be able to stay very briefly the exact premise of your message // what it is you are talking about.)
  2. What is my mission? (This is your goal for this particular message/lesson.)
  3. What is my vision? (Answer this question: As a result of my people hearing this message/lesson I see them _______.)

Please take the time to answer these questions! It will add a clarity and confidence to your delivery that will greatly increase you effectiveness and also cut out a lot of bull – which both God and his people will great appreciate.

A quick reminder for staff and teachers…

If I could add one thing for those that are not senior pastors: take the time to poll your pastor on his/her answers to the above questions.

There is a time and season for all great doctrines and subjects to be taught; but just think if all the men and women with the gift of teaching in your church were in alignment with the “mission of the house” for this season.

The reason so many churches struggle to grow and prosper is that they’re like a drunk man staggering along seeing double // there’s too many visions in the church. I encourage you, get on board with the mission of the house and help propel the church forward into the harvest.

(I recommend this also for worship leaders // know the mission and vision of your senior pastor and make it “pop” with the wonderful gifts and talents God has given you in order to strengthen and inspire the church.)

Blessings to you and may God direct you and help you see what He sees for you and your church.
