How to get a better job…

  • Luke 16:8 (NKJV) For the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.

Seldom a week goes by that someone doesn’t discuss with me concerns about their job.  There are three basic issues:

1)     I need a job

2)     I need a better job

3)     I’m afraid I’m going to lose my job

I was thinking about this recently and asked myself what would be the number one thing a person could do (any person no matter their skills) that would make them employable and in greater demand.

Of course there are several factors but I suggest that there is one that would have to be near the top: Having the mindset that seeks to create value for the customers you serve and for the colleagues you work with without spending money to do so.

That one skill practiced on a daily basis would put you in a class of the most elite and sought after employees.

Think about it, if you are on salary you are costing your company every time you breathe – 24/7.  If you are paid by the hour the moment you punch the clock you are costing your company/customer money.    A companies’ payroll is usually their number one expenses (that explains why management is always trying to replace humans with machines – you only buy a machine once).

So to have an employee that is consistently seeking ways to add value without costing more money is an amazing and valuable asset.  Virtually anyone can think of something nice to do for the company if the company is willing to shell out more money, but only the elite employee is consistently adding value without it costing the company more money.

So whether you are working behind a counter or in a corner office, while you’re doing the job you’re paid to do constantly be thinking of ways that you (not others) can add even more value without it costing the company more.

Do that long enough and you just may one day own the company!

  1. Needed this! I’ve been a rut at work and although I try to live by Colossians 3:23 (to do everything as if I’m doing it for the Lord and not for man), I do fail at it sometimes! I’m blessed to have the job of my dreams, but I feel like God is calling me to more responsibiltiy or a different role (at my current job). Although I’ve had jobs that were not so enjoyable and remembering that you ultimately work for the Lord, helps to get through a rough day at work!

  2. I’ll have to share this with Ryan. He’s been unemployed 9/12 months in 2012. His new job (6 mo. now) is a complete blessing to us, but he’s an overachiever. He wants his employees to give 100% all of the time, and they’re not buying in to it. So frustrating for him. Thanks Pastor!
