Dry Toast, Anyone?

  • Matthew 5:6 (NKJV) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

The last couple days have been tough.  I’ve been fighting the stomach bug that has been going around and it’s hit me pretty hard.  One of the effects is that I have had no appetite; matter of fact, even the thought of eating turns my stomach.

However, through this I’ve been reminded of an important spiritual truth.

Have you ever wondered why people are so resistant to the good news of the Gospel?  Speaking from personal experience, I can vouch for the truth that Jesus Christ is truly the way, the truth, and the life.  It’s inconceivable to me that anyone would not want to be a sold-out/all-in Christian.  Yet all of us know people who have no desire to be a Christian.  They have no appetite whatsoever for God and spiritual things.

How can this be?  How can people turn away from the greatest opportunity that has ever existed: to be in a personal relationship with God.

This stomach virus has reminded me of the answer.  The reason people have no desire for God is that they are sick: sick spiritually.

Our appetite is an indicator.  A healthy appetite is a sign that things are going well; a poor appetite is a warning that things are not going well.

How about you?  What is the intensity of your appetite for prayer and Bible study?  How eager are you to be in church and among fellow believers?

If your appetite is poor – physically or spiritually – the answer is not eating, the answer is getting well so that your appetite returns.  Thank goodness we have someone to turn to for help: the great Physician, Jesus Christ.
