- John 11:35 (NKJV) Jesus wept.
Carl Sandburg the famed 20th century poet claimed that he wrote the shortest poem ever written in English. The poem goes: “Born. Troubled. Died.”
Unfortunately, that is the life-story of many people.
However, the Christian has a different story and it is closely tied to the shortest verse in the Bible: “Jesus wept.” Because Jesus was so closely connected with the human condition He felt – felt deeply – our pain and suffering. But, He didn’t stop there. A few verses later Jesus remedied the cause of his sorrow: death. He remedied it by reminding us that He is the resurrection and life; He demonstrated it by raising his friend – Lazarus – from the dead.
Christians are not immune from suffering and sorrow – we too are born, troubled and die. But our lives are also connected to Jesus Christ and in the end; nothing separates us from Him – even death.
So during this 40-days season of Prayer & Fasting, remember the ultimate benefit: You are drawing closer to Jesus Christ. The benefits of your efforts will benefit you for years to come – even beyond the grave.
For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.
(Psalm 30:5)
