- Romans 13:10 (NKJV) Love does no harm to a neighbor…
I’m not sure that I have ever specifically thought of love in terms of not harming someone. Yet now that I think about it, I can’t tell you the number of times over the years that I have observed people who say they love someone yet consistently and continually harm him or her.
Thinking in terms of not harming someone changes the focus.
For example, no matter how much someone says they love you don’t believe it if they intentionally do things that they know harms you.
Disclaimer: I’m not talking about making you “unhappy”. There are many times that the most loving thing a person can do is make someone unhappy (can you say, “The Terrible Twos!”).
And then, what about our efforts at not harming someone…
There are many things you could do personally that would do you no harm, but because you know it will harm someone you love, you restrain yourself: that’s love in action. In other words, not doing things for love’s sake affects entertainment choices, eating habits, spending habits, career choices and dozens other things.
Bottom line, love is about so much more than what we do for people, it is about those things that we do not do…because of love.
