Today’s ONE THING: “Competence fosters trust, increased competence increases trust”

What are you competent at?  It is in those areas of your competency that people trust you.  Take softball for an example.  If your batting average is .125, people may like you, love you and even cheer for you (on those rare occasions that you hit the ball).  However, I can assure you that when the game is in on the line the coach will not be looking your way when it comes time to send in a pinch-hitter.  Why?  Because he doesn’t trust you.  Your competency level is so low that that the trust factor is virtually non-existent.

Now that is OK in softball, but in the game of life the moment people start losing trust in you you’re finished.  Oh you may hang around for a while but believe me, you’re no longer in the long-range plans; you’re no longer a factor.

So what to do?  Answer: Grow in your competency.

The irony of this is that you will most likely have to find the time to do this on your own.  Most companies do really take seriously the connection between increasing the competency level of their employees and the increased rate of return on their bottom line.  Nevertheless, I encourage you to set aside a little time each day to read the trade journals/books of your industry.  Learn the new technology.  Read the fine print.  Ask questions.  Pay for the lunch of someone who is your superior, ask questions, and listen.  Grow!

Remember, competency doesn’t stand still.  You’re either growing more competent or you’re being left behind.  How is it with you?  When the boss looks for a pinch-hitter, does she look your way?
