Today’s ONE THING…

A few days ago I couldn’t help but chuckle as I read a “tweet” from one of the youth from our church.  They had written, “I’ve just learned how to trade stocks!”  Oh the optimism of youth. 🙂  If by chance this young person truly makes trading stocks a vocation they will soon come face-to-face with the brutal reality that “trading stocks” is a cut-throat world that can grind a person up in a few seconds and leave them broken and broke.

However, I would never discourage the optimism of youth, we need that broad vista of possibilities when we are young; it gives us hope and an opportunity to dream.  A sign of a healthy young mind is that virtually anything is possible.

Nevertheless as time progresses our lives should be like a funnel – narrowing our focus with each passing year.  There will come a time that you should realize that there are only so many options per lifetime.  We are limited by time – our days are numbered. And we are limited by space – we can only be in one place at a time.  In some ways our life should be like a funnel, narrowing our focus as we get older.

This leads me to the ONE THING for today: “Stay focused on the 5%”

Let me explain…

Experts tell us that on average, 10% of what we do each day anybody with an average skill set could do.  In addition, about 85% of your daily responsibilities are things that virtually anyone could do with the proper training and support.  The remaining 5% are those very few things that ONLY you can do.  The more you focus on those last 5% the more fulfilling and productive your life will be.

I’ll discuss this with you more tomorrow, but for today ponder on this topic and make a list of your 5%.

Catch you later…Lord willing…

  1. It would be interesting to see what one comes up with as there 5% list and then compare it to their Spouse’s thoughts of their 5% list.

    1. You’re ahead of me on that Chris; I’d never thought about that. This illustrates one of the things that has deeply impressed me about you in our conversations…and that is how you are lavish in the praise of your wife. I’ve often said that you can tell a lot about a man by the way he treats his wife; your actions speak very favorably of you.
