Ponderings from Panama

Reflections from Sunday, August 21

Side note for you “PEPpers” – your mission dollars at work: Starting today I am going to include a picture of one of the children that you support at the Casa Hogar Canaan orphanage.

You have to have been to a service in Panama to understand fully what I experienced Sunday in Panama.  But imagine stepping into a large wind chime shop with a hurricane blowing through it and you will be sorta close.

I don’t know what time church in Panama actually starts.  When I arrive the service is always already in progress.  I suspect that they think that we soft U.S. Americans couldn’t take the full dose and they’re probably right.

Irven Garcia (Age 11, DOB: February 20)

When I arrived the service was in full swing and the music was LOUD!  (Did I mention that it was loud?)  The people were singing, clapping, waving their hands and swaying to the music.  Bottom line they were having a fun time at their Father God’s house.

I didn’t understand a word they said or sung; but I didn’t have any trouble knowing what they were doing – they were worshipping – celebrating the faithfulness and love of God.    It was then that I was reminded of another lesson:  Worship can’t be just an inside job.  If we truly love and honor God it will be expressed in some way.  Stoic, lifeless form and ritual is not found in the Bible.  Like me, you may not have a lot of “Panamian” in you, but to know and love Jesus Christ means that your worship will be expressed in some way.  So this Sunday, don’t just stand there, do something…and could I also add that worship is not just a Sunday event.  Worship today!  Do something to show God that you truly do love and honor Him.

Have fun today,

dlkemp
