Question:
What needs to be done to be better prepared for this week’s Sabbath?
One of the most important days of the year for a citizen of the United States of America is April 15; that is the deadline for we Americans to put our money where our mouth is.
We know that this day is coming and yet somehow every year millions of us find ourselves rushing around at the last minute trying to pull things together so that we can file our income tax statements.
Why is this? Why do we postpone taking care of things that we know we are going to have to do? Why do we put off going to the doctor for our physical or to check out an aliment we may have? Why do so many of us wait to the last minute to get our Christmas shopping done? Why?! Why do we do this to ourselves?
I’m not sure I know the answer to this dilemma (sorry about that). But one thing I do know, if we knew we were going to receive a million dollars if we kept an appointment; but if we were a second late we would lose out, I suspect that we’d be on time!
Could it be that we make provisions to be on time for those things we really value but we’re slack about those things that we don’t value less? Or put another way, is preparation (or lack thereof) a sign of what we value?
My wife is a world-class cook; but one thing I’ve noticed is that there is a world of difference between a meal that she just “threw together” and one that she carefully planned and prepared. The fifth commandment to remember the Sabbath to keep it holy is a weekly appointment that you are going to have to face God about someday. I suspect that there will be an eternity of difference between those that repeatedly missed the deadline or just threw something together and those that took the time to daily prepare for that weekly day of delight.
Bottom line, it is never to early to begin planning for your next Sabbath day. What are you going to do about it today?
