God words vs. good words

Good morning all!

The following quotation stood out to me this morning in my devotional time:

“I do not agree with the popular success literature that says that self-esteem is primarily a matter of mind set, of attitude – that you can psych yourself into peace of mind.  Peace of mind comes when your life is in harmony with true principles and values, and in no other way.” Steven Covey

What we believe shows in what we say.  This quotation is a case in point.  On the surface it appears to be correct; and it is up to a point.  I agree strongly with Covey about trying to have a healthy self-esteem and peace of mind without living your life in harmony with true principles and values.  The many people who are trying to build their lives on a foundation that does not believe in absolute truth are setting themselves up for a fall when the storms of life come (Matthew 7:24-29).

The only problem is that Covey doesn’t go far enough.  You see, Covey is Mormon and what you believe is revealed in what you say.  As a Mormon Covey acknowledges that there is a “Jesus” but Jesus is not his Lord.  To Covey, Jesus is not God’s only-begotten Son who died for our sins.  Therefore, as good as this quotation is, it is not “Christian.”  As a Christian, we know that only in surrendering our lives to Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior will we truly obtain a healthy self-image and peace of mind.

Or in the words of the Apostle Paul: Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV) “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Bottom line, Covey’s words are “good word”; Paul’s words are “God words.”

Lesson: Be careful the “wells” you drink from.

  1. Hello Pastor, I bought the book you mentioned “Hunger for God”. I will read it in my time of prayer and fasting. As the author wrote “When God is the supreme hunger of your heart, He will be supreme in everything. And when you are most satisfied in Him, He will be most glorified in you. I do hunger for more of God and I want Him to be glorified in everything that I do and say.
    Love and blessings, Ramona Helton
