Warning: Jesus can be offensive!

  • John 6:60, 66 (NLT) Many of his disciples said, “This is very hard to understand. How can anyone accept it?”  66 At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.

It is important for us to understand that the issue in today’s verses is not that Jesus’ words were hard to understand; rather they were offensive.

The NEB translates it: “This is more than we can stomach!  Why listen to such talk!”

If you honestly read the Bible there will be “kick-back” moments when you will have to make a choice; where you will have to ask yourself: “Am I willing to change even though I don’t want to or am I going to be in rebellion to Jesus and His word and continue doing what I want?”

This is the demarcation between true and false disciples.

Some would say that the “disciples” in 6:66 were never really disciples and others would say that they were but chose to walk away from God, i.e. backslide.

Whichever camp you are in the real issue is: True disciples align their lives with God’s word even when it is offensive.

  1. It will never change and reminders whether scheduled or spontaneous are necessary regardless of their reception.
