“‘But,’ said Sam, and tears started in his eyes, ‘I thought you were going to enjoy the Shire, too, for years and years, after all you have done.’ ‘So I thought too, once. But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.”The Lord Of The Rings: The One Volume by J.R.R. Tolkien

This principle is at the core of the preservation of anything of value, whether it is marriage, parenthood, patriotism, even the advancement of the Church.  When there are not enough people willing to sacrifice their lives to preserve a better life for others a civilization dies.

The ONE THING for today: Walk humbly today and don’t be so quick to find fault. There are forgotten heroes that sacrificed everything so that you can enjoy the privileges and benefits that you have today.

Maybe its your turn to take one for the team.
