“Life is a game of inches.

―Coach Tony D’Amato, Any Given Sunday

In the 1999 film Any Given Sunday, Al Pacino, playing Coach Tony D’Amato gives his famous “Inch by Inch” locker room speech, challenging his players to fight for every inch.

In that speech he states: “Life is a game of inches.”

That was stated in a movie.

In real life, former NFL Coach, Mike Smith says basically the same thing in his book, You Win in the Locker Room First” where he stated, “The difference between winning and losing in the NFL is truly a matter of inches—five or six plays in every game.”

Did you get that? One any given day, the game is won or lost on five or six plays.

That is true in life, not just the NFL.

Everyday we make a few vital choices that will determine if we win that day.

Yes, life happens. There are some things that are beyond our control.  The most talented, experienced, and capable person will sometimes get beaten by a better opponent.  There’s no disgrace in that.

But what must not be acceptable is sabotaging our own life by conceding the best for only the good, or worst yet, to sacrifice the mission because we become distracted with the trivial and unimportant, missing the news because we were focused on the noise.

Be diligent.  There are only a few wise decisions that you must make today, but to miss those moments is not only to lose today but to lessen the chance for future wins because you didn’t do what was required today.

The ONE THING for today: Don’t get comfortable with just okay.  Live to win, dear friend!
