“We shouldn’t make the mistake of moving automatically from “is” to “ought.””
— When God Goes to Starbucks: A Guide to Everyday Apologetics by Paul Copan
Copan nailed me this morning.
Why didn’t I think of this?
We’ve all done is…look at a situation and sagely shake our head and say, “It is what it is.” (Like that is suppose to help matters.)
Paul Copan’s quote reminds us that “It is what it is” is a descriptive term, not a moral term. Just because something is the way it is doesn’t mean that it should be that way. That’s where human agency fits in. That’s where you and I fit in.
It’s our job to strive for what ought to be.
The ONE THING for today: Is is what it is because nothing changes because no one changes. You be the one to change that.
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
(John 5:8)
This scripture is becoming one of my favorites right now. Because for this man, there was no more hanging around the pool and waiting on the angel to bring a miracle … that inevitable brought favor to someone besides himself. It makes me smile 😃.

Well said. I am reminded of one of the quotes in my quote file: “The trouble with miracles is that they are so unpredictable.” The best policy is hope for a miracle while we’re trying to be one ourselves! Good to hear from you Candy.

Loving this passage recently because the time had come for this man to stop hanging around the pool waiting on an angel to bring a miracle … to yet another person besides himself. It makes me smile 😃.
