- Psalm 97:6 (NKJV) The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory.
This past Friday Sonja and I walked one of the natural trails in our area. The last time we walked that trail winter still had its icy grip on all the terrain. This past Friday I remember walking past a spot where I had stopped the previous time to take some pictures of some winter flowers that were peeping out from the dead leaves. This time the winter flowers were gone but in their place was an explosion of beautiful new life: Spring had sprung!
But let’s get back to that word “beautiful”. Why does it matter if something is beautiful? Have you ever stopped to think that we humans are the only thing in all the Universe that thinks in terms of beauty.
The planets and stars are not impressed with the exquisite order and fine tuning that makes life on planet earth possible.
The ocean is not impressed by the lush beaches of the Caribbean or the majestic craggy beaches that line the coastline of northern California, Oregon and Washington.
Flowers do not have beauty pageants to determine which flower will be “Ms. U.S.A.” flower of the year.
Dogs and cats do not have gourmet restaurants; they’d just as soon as eat the same food everyday for their entire life.
So why does food have taste? Why are flowers beautiful? Why are there order and symmetry and beauty and flavor and smell and touch and feeling?
Rocks and dirt do not need these things. Trees could care less about it and even the animals of the field have very little concept of feelings beyond instinct.
It’s as if the universe was made in anticipation that we would arrive…
Bingo! It was. All the order, symmetry and beauty was put there by a loving Creator for us; to reveal His nature and His love so that we would turn our hearts toward Him (Romans 1:20, Psalm 97:6).
So remember, the reason food doesn’t taste like cardboard and sawdust is because God loves you. The reason seasons bring with them a special and singular beauty is because God loves you. Bottom line, all around you – every smell, sight and star – is God’s way of saying, “I made this for you.”
Never doubt His love; all the universe is a reminder that He does.
