Today’s ONE THING: “But I don’t have to!”

  • Ephesians 5:21 (NKJV) … submitting to one another in the fear of God.

One of our most carefully guarded “rights” is the right of free choice; or put another way, we don’t like the concept of being accountable. Husbands don’t like their wives telling them what to do; wives don’t want their husbands bossing them around and children most certainly think they know as much (let’s be honest – even more) than their parents and parents would rather get a root canal than be accountable to their children – as in, “Call me on it when I break a promise.”

The same is true at work, school, church and even concerning the laws of the country – as in the speed limit is for all those crazy drivers; surely not for you and me.

However, let me introduce you to a concept taught in the bible that would save you countless grieve and set you up for unbelievable success and happiness; the concept is called “mutual submission” or “mutual accountability”.

When I talk about mutual accountability I’m not talking about a boss/employee relationship or a teacher/student relationship, for example. What I mean by “mutual accountability” is having the maturity and humility to willing submit to someone who you do not necessarily have to. You hold yourself accountable to them because it is the right thing to do and because it is beneficial.

Take a moment and think of the grief you would have dodged if you’d only practiced this. Think of the petty arguments and strife that could have been avoided if you’d put your ego aside and played team ball.

God takes this concept serious. Jesus modeled it by humbling himself and coming to earth in the form of man, by washing the disciple’s feet and even by submitting to a Roman execution on a Cross. Perhaps it time you took another look at the concept yourself.
