It’s important to see your role as a preacher/teacher in terms of vocation (it’s what you are). What I mean by that is that you are called of God to preach/teach. Your calling is more than a position or paycheck it is what you are.
I mention this to remind you that you must not see your role as a preacher/teacher simply in terms of your brief moment behind your pulpit. You are a preacher/teacher all the time. To be an effective communicator requires more than study and prayer (both very important). It also requires you staying in touch with the people you minister to all week.
There is nothing that will make your preaching/teaching sterile and academic like having no contact with your people outside of the classroom or church. I encourage you to stay in touch with your people. Be systematic about calling/visiting them.
Remember while you are studying for the people each week it is vitally important to keep persons in your life each day. It is those encounters that help connect you with those you minister too.
Hopefully, what you say on Sunday shows your people you know something; but what you do through the week shows them you care. It takes both – knowledge and caring – to truly be an effective communicator of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
