With a Focus on 40-days of Prayer & Fasting… Day-31/40 (78% Complete)

  • John 21:21-22 (NKJV) Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

I got a little chuckle out of an event I read recently of a time when President Calvin Coolidge invited some people from his hometown to dinner at the White house. When the time came for serving coffee, the president poured his coffee into a saucer. As soon as his guests saw it, they did the same. Next, the president poured some milk and added a little sugar to the coffee in the saucer. The home folks did the same. They thought that surely the next step would be for the president to take the saucer with the coffee and begin sipping it. But the president didn’t do so. He leaned over, placed the saucer on the floor, and called the cat.

I guess the reason that little story stood out to me is that with me fasting all caffeine this year, I’d begrudge my cats a saucer of coffee! Plus, that is exactly how I started drinking coffee. I remember as a boy my mother occasionally pouring a little coffee (more Carnation milk and sugar than coffee) in a saucer so that it would cool quickly and then allowing me to enjoy sipping it. Ah…the good ole days!

But here’s the deal: remember, this 40-days is meant to be experienced with your fellow believers, but it is not to be experience exactly like your fellow believers. Maybe this is the year for one of your friends to see angels and walk on water; in comparison, your experience this year may seem a little tame. No matter, the point is to be truthful to what God has put on your heart. In the end, He will ensure that you get exactly what you need for this time.

When comparing notes on your 40-days experience with others, remember faithfulness is what counts – not the “bells and whistles”.
