- Genesis 15:5 (NKJV) Then He brought him outside and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”
Last night at the prayer service one of the prayer requests that I prayed for on the altar was someone asking for prayer for their husband – “that his job would be secure.” Later that evening as I was talking with someone before leaving they mentioned a family member who was going to work hurt. They said, “Companies don’t save a job for you anymore.”
I could give you a dozen other examples – and so could you. Truly we live in a world that is anything but secure. Life is ever-changing and – young or old – it is hard to keep up. Just when you’ve learned the latest technology something new burst on the scene. Just when you’ve figured out how to do your job a new company comes along that threatens to put your company out of business. Just when you get your act together they change the script.
How are we supposed to cope in this fast lane life that we’re living in?
Well, there are some tried and true practices that are never out of date: prayer and fasting.
Whether you are a pastor or a painter, a programmer or a parent – prayer and fasting is still as effective today as it was when Abraham looked up at the stars and believed that God would give him that many descendants.
As I was praying for that dear wife and her husband last night I thought: His job may not be secure, but if that couple’s trust is in God then they are secure. Jobs come and go. Companies downsize, lay-off and restructure all the time; but our “the-same-yesterday-today-and-forever God” still responds to His children’s prayers and He will not let them down. Now that is security.
