Weekly Pastors & Teachers Briefing

  • I Timothy 6:20-21 (NKJV) O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

Think of your ministry as a “trust”. It is like a couple who are your very close friends being tragically killed and them having left in their will everything they own in a trust for the benefit of their children – and you are the guardian of their children and the trust. That would be a major responsibility that would need to be taken very seriously.

That is what Paul is trying to relate to Timothy in today’s verses.

I know the obvious thing that has been committed to us is the Christian Faith. However, that Faith has been committed to us by someone: we need to represent them well.

In the case of Timothy it was Paul; pastor in your case it is the Church of God, Cleveland, TN (for most of you that receive this email). While we know that the Church of God is not the only thing going for the Kingdom of God in the world; that is not the point. God is big on covenant-keeping. When we took credentials with the COG we entered a covenant relationship with every COG member (both past, present and future). We are to guard that trust zealously.

Teacher: in your case, your pastor has committed the vision and mission and pastoral responsibilities God has given him/her into your care. That is a sacred trust and covenant and to be handled with great care and responsibility.

Whether pastor or teacher, avoid “profane and idle babblings” (subjects outside that which has been committed to you). When you contradict those that have committed the Faith to you, you stray and when you stray, unfortunately you take people with you: nobody wins in that scenario.

Our calling does not include blindly following those that have committed the Faith into our care; but breaking covenant is a serious thing and keeping trust is a sacred responsibility.

Oh God, please help us to give a good account to the faith once delivered to us.
