Are you ready sports fans! Here’s my final definition of success: To have set up for success, the generation(s) that will follow me and then cheer them on from Heaven.
You know, you can live most of your life and not really think about what is going to happen after the end of your life (here on earth). I know I did. My strategy for taking care of things after I left this world was life insurance. I thought that was enough…WRONG!
Two children, five grandchildren, the many wonderful young adults, teens and children that pastor and the many dedicated younger pastors that are coming up after me has changed all that.
Success is not leaving behind a nice tombstone or even a sizeable financial endowment. Success is not having a long funeral because it takes so long to talk about the things that you accomplished. Success is not having a building named after you or having your name and bio mentioned in Wikipedia. Nothing wrong with any of these, but the memorial that you really want to leave is flesh and blood: people.
Oh, life will go on and you will most certainly be forgotten – but if you get this right, in the souls and psyches of the generations that follow will be your values, principles and faith. They may not know it years from now, but they’re recognize you when they join you in Heaven and say, “So you’re the reason I’m here!”
Now that’s success.
