Another important definition of “real” success

  • John 4:10 (NKJV) Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

July 19, 2010 was a very special day in my life. It was a Monday and my children had come over for our weekly family meal. I was the last to arrive that night and upon entering the room – for the first time – David Lee got up on his feet and walked/staggered over to me with his arms outstretched. He knew me! What a privilege.

Sadly, on that same day, if I had walked into my father-in-law’s room he would not have known me. He was still living then but was lost in the horrible morass of Alzheimer’s and wouldn’t have known his own wife and daughters.I don’t think we realize enough just how precious and meaningful it is to be known…really known.

Of course, if you are like most people, there are many people who know of you, but that is not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about those precious people who truly know you.

That is why I consider one of the most important definitions of success to be: To be loved and respected by those who know me best.
