The one thing that will greatly increase your chances of success in 2013

  • Proverbs 10:19 (NIV) When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.

December is a time for reflections: reflecting back over the current year, but more importantly reflecting on the New Year that is just days away.

If I had to give you just one thing that would make a huge difference toward making 2013 a better year for you it would be to do a better job at managing your words. This one thing would drastically improve your chances of having a successful year. Over the next few days I hope to share with you a few thoughts on managing your words wisely.

The first thing to note is so obvious that it can often be overlooked and it is:

  1. FIRST: Speak only what is necessary.

The first of the year is a time when we go on diets; why not go on a “word diet”.  Just as eating less calories reduces unneeded weight, saying less will drastically reduce the number of headaches, heartbreak and hurts, both for you and for those you love in 2013. Furthermore, it will greatly increase the chance that you will “not shoot yourself in the foot” and thus greatly increase your chances of survival and success.

Therefore, one of the best questions you can silently ask yourself before opening your mouth to speak is: “Does this really need to be said?”

Well, I could go on with this but then…I’d better practice what I preach. 🙂
