You’ve probably hear of “White Elephant” gifts. The term comes from a legend of a man who gave his enemy a white elephant which was extremely rare and valuable. However, the man receiving the gift went bankrupt because he had to pay for the upkeep of the elephant. Ever since the term “White Elephant gift” has come to mean receiving gifts that end up being something you really don’t want.
Perhaps this Christmas you are dealing with issues that you did ask for. At first glance it seems to be a random, unasked for and unwanted “White Elephant gift”. But let me suggest this: Take what life gives you.
Take what life gives you by trusting in Romans 8:28 – knowing that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Complaining and making excuses about your misfortune gets you nowhere. Giving in to paralyzing grief over your losses and heart breaks does nothing but add more pain and sorrow. Take what life gives you and build a testimony of faithfulness and courage.
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns. The comfortable life can turn into a battle with cancer overnight. The fair winds of fortune can turn into a storm of failure in one day. Life happens – it happens to all of us – and it is not always pleasant or fun. However, if we truly believe there is a good and loving God behind everything, then we can turn our white elephant gifts into testimonies: Testimonies of our faith in God and God’s faithful work in us.
