Content with Failure

  • 2 Chronicles 15:7 (NIV) But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.

One of the most tragic events in the history of the United States of America was our Civil war.  Untold tragedy and loss occurred and scars were left upon our nation that defines us to this day.

One of the factors contributing to the length of this devastating war was the fact that the Union armies had such poor leadership from their generals.  The Union army suffered crushing defeat after defeat under the command of seven different generals.

On one occasion, after one of his generals had given a long report trying to justify yet another Union loss, President Lincoln was reported to respond, “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.”

That is a profound statement that hits at the nerve center of every person.  Without exception, every person is going to fail – multiple times.  The question is not whether or not you will fail but whether or not you will become content with that failure.

Don’t give justifications for why you failed: make new promises to yourself for the next time.

Don’t rationalize your failures, learn from them and start anew.

Don’t rename your failures, calling them “moral victories” or lowering expectations.

Take your lumps, get up and start anew.

Whatever arena you live and work in – failure is a reality of life…

…but victory is waiting for the person that refuses to give up.

Take courage my friend you can do this.
