Colossians 4:5 (NKJV) Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
Never forget that you have two ways to spend your time: repairing or preparing.
I encourage you to choose preparing; for repairing has to do with a broken past and preparing has to do with a better future.
Basically you have three ways to respond to this principle.
- First, you can be a historian – spending your day worrying and fretting about the past.
- Second, you can be a manager – spending your day trying to manage whatever happens today.
- Third, you can be a leader – spending at least part of your day making decisions that are creating a better future for our life.
The truth is your day may be adversely affected because of unwise and harmful decisions (by both you and others). However, allowing yourself to become trapped by the past is like living in a cage. Yesterday happened – good or bad – it’s over, done, and gone. Deal with it. FIDO it (forget it and drive on).
Furthermore, a portion of your day must be spent in managing life, no question there. I mean, the bills must be paid, the dishes washed and the grass cut. Life is full of things that must be put on our daily “To do” list.
However, the best use of your time today will be intentionally taking actions today that will ensure that you have a better tomorrow.
This can be as simple as:
- Saving and investing a dollar or two
- Reading a good book that equips you for a project or promotion
- Investing in a meaningful relationship that you hope to be still be involved in this time next year
- Exercising
Bottom line, if you do not plant seed today you cannot expect a harvest tomorrow. The only harvest you will have is someone else’s harvest – and I can assure you that the seed they are planting will probably not be in your best interest.
Take charge of your life today.
Do something today that will create a better tomorrow.
That is the essence of leadership.
