- Romans 7:6 (NKJV) But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
I read the other day of a French lawyer who stuck a deal with a ninety-year-old widow. For a payment of $500 per month to her until she died, he bought the rights to take over the lease on her fashionable Paris apartment. At her age, it looked like a shrewd investment. In 1995, thirty years and $180,000 later, he was still paying—when she turned 120! (I love it! :))
How many Christians do you know who are like that lawyer? For them, God’s laws are not an opportunity to please God and serve others but to win an advantage over others. “Mean Christians” they are. (Throwing in a little “Yoda” for you.) They’re the Christians that whip out their big “Law-gun” and pistol whip people into submission; and then there’s the other type that lays the Laws of God on their back like a Cross and mournfully go through life like a martyr making people feel guilty because they can never measure up to that great and miserable “saint” who is so “godly”.
Heaven spare us! Remember, a person can keep the letter of the law by never actually murdering someone and yet be a murderer in her heart. My prayer is that we will be like those special and true saints of God who live by the spirit of God’s law who not only not murder, but also love and care for even those that others may secretly like to murder.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, deliver us from being mean-spirited, legalistic Christians and by your Holy Spirit, fill us with love and mercy. _Amen
