- Acts 16:3 (NKJV) Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.
The dynamics of human relationships can really be complicated. In the case of Timothy, the fact that he was Greek and not circumcised was stopping him from success. How crazy is that!? Yet there is no accounting for the irrationality of the human race. We’ve all seen people who were held back, kept out or put down for no better reason than they were the wrong sex, nationality or some other reason that had nothing to do with their ability to perform and contribute.
Perhaps you are dealing with this issue yourself. Is there anything you can do? Yes there is! The answer is not to be passive and become a victim; instead, take action. It may be painful (circumcision in the case of Timothy!) but if the cause is worthy and the mission is great – go for it. Take action, find a way to connect, accept the irrationality of people and realize that you probably have a few irrational prejudices yourself.
At the end of the day, you can’t control many of the factors in life that have been dealt you but you can control how you are going to respond. Respond nobly, practically and patiently.
Remember, no matter your background or other people’s opinion of you, God created you and you have a divine purpose. Hold your head up, trust that God knew what he was doing when He made you, and act like it – no matter what others may think.
